Men’s
Soccer Tackling First Conference Game
This year’s soccer season will be head coach Chris Clements fifth
consecutive year in coach the Avila University Men’s Soccer team. This 2012
season will have the most soccer players on the team than any other year before
it. Having an estimate of twenty returning players from 2011, and twenty-two
more will be added to the roster. Players come from all over, including up
north in Wisconsin to down south in Arkansas, even from other countries like
Brazil. This year they are hoping to make it to the HAAC (Heart of America
Conference) tournament, which is known to be the best men’s conference in the
country. They are trying to make the tournament for the first time in Avila’s
school history.
The 2012 Men’s soccer team kicked off on Saturday, September
29th playing Graceland University, a team out of Iowa. Avila played
well in the first half, keeping up with Graceland which at the time was
receiving votes to be in the top twenty-five for top best teams in the country.
Score was at 0-0 at halftime. Avila came back in the second half powerful once
again but unfortunately Graceland was able to get around players to get there
first goal making the score 0-1. Once Graceland’s first score, Avila started to
break down and ended up letting two more goals make it through for the opposing
team. The final score being 0-3, Graceland’s win.
Even though the first conference game was not a win for
Avila, the men were able to shake it off and look forward to their next opponent
which will be this Saturday, October 6th vs. Baker University at
home. Baker ended the 2011 season with a record of 22-1 and was number three in
the country. Might be a tuff competitor, but Avila has the team that can come
out with a win!
