AMC Theaters

AMC Theaters are very well known in the Kansas and Missouri area. With Avila University being on the state line, it allows students to bounce back and fourth from Kansas to Missouri. Avila University’s library as been known to give the students free presents through out the work week. By receiving an email through Avila, students can find out if there are things being given away and on which day. The library tends to be the hot spot to go when students find out about the free “give away days”. When school started Avila gave out cool sunglasses to students, representing with the Avila “A” logo on them. Recently students have been exciting to hear that the library has free movie passes. Working with AMC Theaters, students are able to go to the library and show a student ID. Then they are able to receive one free movie pass to the local AMC Theaters. Having two AMC’s being less than a fifteen-minute drive, students love the idea. Teachers and parents of Avila students think that by Avila funding a few movie passes, it steers their children and students away from getting into any sort of trouble. Keep that email up to date and look for the next time Avila University may be giving out a free night to the movies.

A New Degree

Avila University is known to have a great, advancing communication department full of the latest technology and education. The communication department has two main degrees. Advertising and Public Relations and Film and Digital Media were the two bachelor degrees that an undergrad student could receive. Advertising and Public Relations focuses on plans and proposals, having the education to be able to come up with new branding strategies, and being able to conduct market research. It prepares students for careers in advertising, copy writing, public relations, and sales. Film and Digital Media focuses on being able to make music videos, conduct and edit corporate videos, and develop web pages. Careers in any film production, corporate screenwriting, and studio recording is the route that this bachelor’s degree would take you. In spring 2012, Avila University decided to bring a new bachelors degree option to the students called, Sports Communication. Sports communication helps pursue students to a career in sports media. Sports Communication focuses more on the broadcasting side, but also with the basics of an Advertising and PR degree. Each student will complete a professional internship prier to graduating. Which will help a student get experience in the real world, and also help have professional contacts that could later help someone to have a advantage when it comes down to finding a job. Avila University has a good record so far, even before having a degree that emphasizes on sports. Alumni’s from Avila are already finding careers as sports anchors, working with the TBones baseball team in Kansas, and writing for ESPN. Alexandria Cox, who is currently getting her degree in Sports Communication. In the classes she has learned skills that have helped her promote in a sports media field. The above photo, Alexandria Cox is with Neil Smith, a NFL Hall of Famer, who are promoting for a local medical center.

2012 Election

The 2012 election between the United States current president, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney has been a year to remember. Asking students on campus if they are voting and where they are going to go to vote. Dustin Deisher, a senior and active student who participates on the Avila soccer team said he is voting. This is going to be his second election and he finds the campaigns very interesting. “Everyone should vote if you are of age, your vote matters,” said Deisher. He believes that people should care who is going to be the next president and that they should be educated on both sides on what each person believes in. Deisher also thought that the voting places are not advertised enough. Students especially, do not know where they need to go and vote. Diesher thought that Avila University should help advertise and put up flyers to where students can go and elect the next president. Diesher said, “The times and areas around town would be great to know.” Suggesting that Avila University should be responsible in advertising where election polls are going to be, students need to research and really understand each side of the campaign. Making sure that before voting, they clearly understand whom they are supporting.
