A New Degree




Avila University is known to have a great, advancing communication department full of the latest technology and education. The communication department has two main degrees. Advertising and Public Relations and Film and Digital Media were the two bachelor degrees that an undergrad student could receive. Advertising and Public Relations focuses on plans and proposals, having the education to be able to come up with new branding strategies, and being able to conduct market research. It prepares students for careers in advertising, copy writing, public relations, and sales. Film and Digital Media focuses on being able to make music videos, conduct and edit corporate videos, and develop web pages. Careers in any film production, corporate screenwriting, and studio recording is the route that this bachelor’s degree would take you. In spring 2012, Avila University decided to bring a new bachelors degree option to the students called, Sports Communication. Sports communication helps pursue students to a career in sports media. Sports Communication focuses more on the broadcasting side, but also with the basics of an Advertising and PR degree. Each student will complete a professional internship prier to graduating. Which will help a student get experience in the real world, and also help have professional contacts that could later help someone to have a advantage when it comes down to finding a job. Avila University has a good record so far, even before having a degree that emphasizes on sports. Alumni’s from Avila are already finding careers as sports anchors, working with the TBones baseball team in Kansas, and writing for ESPN. Alexandria Cox, who is currently getting her degree in Sports Communication. In the classes she has learned skills that have helped her promote in a sports media field.
